The Lynne Cohen Preventive Care Program for Women’s Cancers at UAB
In this clinic, we provide an in-depth consultation examining personal and family medical history. With all of the information, our team will collaborate to develop an individual risk assessment, educate each individual about their risk and determine the best early detection and risk-reduction strategies on an individual basis. Women at high risk for ovarian and breast cancer have access to screening services, such as mammography, MRI, pelvic ultrasounds and serum-based screening tests as indicated; consultation with a genetic counselor who has specific expertise in ovarian and breast cancer genetics; breast examinations; recommendations for risk-reduction strategies including lifestyle modification, chemo-preventive medications that have been found to decrease breast or ovarian cancer risk and prophylactic surgery if indicated; as well as access to the latest early detection and prevention clinical trials.

3. Ovarian Spore Project: Array-based analysis of primary and metastatic ovarian tumors to identify risk factors/predisposing genetic elements for ovarian cancer, as well as genetic heterogeneity associated with ovarian cancer spread and progression.

1. Personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer
2. BRCA1 or 2 and/or Ashkenazi Jewish descent with one affected relative
3. Personal risk factors that may increase risk for breast cancer including breast biopsy
with atypical cells or lobular carcinoma in situ, multiple breast biopsies, age greater
than 60, hormone related factors including beginning menstrual periods at an early
age, going through menopause at a late age, having no children or having a first
child after age 30.
